Almost everybody suffers from a fungal disease at least once in their life. Also known as mycoses, the fungi can be divided into two groups – ‘local/superficial mycoses’ and ‘systemic mycoses’. Whereas the latter attacks the inside of the body, superficial mycoses occur on the surface – such as on the skin or nails. Direct transmission requires direct contact with an infected person or animal, indirect transmission can occur through contact with items colonised by fungus. The most well-known fungal infections include foot, nail and vaginal infections. Fungal diseases are caused by three different types of agents – dermatophytes, yeast and mould, all of which are easily treatable with specific medication.
