The study of virology encompasses the study of the spread, prevention and treatment of virally-transmitted infections – which can affect both humans and animals. As climate change prompts the emergence of more and more viruses, researchers are forced to develop new vaccines which are able to tackle these infections. Consequently, virology has found an important place in tropical medicine. An early and rapid diagnosis is decisive, as delayed intervention can have dramatic, or even fatal consequences.
