Urinary tract infections (UTI) are caused by pathogens infecting the urinary tract. Should the infection spread to the kidneys or bloodstream, it can become quite serious - in the worst case, a bladder infection caused by hypothermia can lead to renal pyelonephritis. Urinary tract infections can be categorized as ‘uncomplicated’, ‘complicated’, and ‘recurrent’. With an uncomplicated UTI, urination is not hindered by bladder stones or prostate enlargement and are no threat to the immune system. An example of an uncomplicated urinary tract infection is inflammation of the bladder, triggered by hypothermia, stress, menstruation and so forth. With a complicated urinary tract infection, urination is hampered by bladder stones, immune defence weakened and the situation can lead to diabetes mellitus or other metabolic conditions. Without medical treatment, kidney damage can occur. Recurrent infections should also be treated by a doctor. Such infections occur repeatedly in a short space of time and can cause lasting damage.
