New rapid test for the detection of synthetic Cathions Methylenedioxypyrovalerones

Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) belongs to the group of psychotropic substances and acts as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor.

MDPV was originally developed as a stimulant for the central nervous system in the 1960s and explored as a possible replacement for Ritalin, yet it has never been used in medicine. In 2005 the drug appeared in the drug scene for the first time. Afterwards MDPV became a designer drug and respectively, a so called "Legal High". It often sold under the slogan "Bath Salts".

In 2012 MDPV has been included in Appendix II of the narcotics act. It is thus a narcotic drug which can not be prescribed.
